Drain Cleaning

We clear blocked and slow drains — sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, floor drains and the main drain out to the street. Most household blockages are cleared in a single visit, and clearing it is usually the whole job. If the same drain backs up again within a few months, the pipe itself is the problem rather than what went down it, and that is a different piece of work.

$75 dispatch fee, credited to your bill when you book.

Looking down into an excavation from above. A member of the crew, in a shirt carrying the 1896 Plumbing & Heating name and phone number, crouches in the hole beside the exposed main drain. Marking paint is sprayed on the ground and along the pipe, and water has collected in the bottom of the trench.
Where clearing stops being the answer: the main drain dug out and opened up. Marking paint locates what is already buried before anything is cut.

Clearing it, then working out why

Clearing a blockage is the easy half. The half that saves you the next call is finding out why it blocked, because a drain that backs up twice in a year is telling you about the pipe, not about what went down it.

Some of those causes are ours to fix on the same visit: a fitting that was never right, or a vent that is not doing its job and is holding the water back. Others mean the buried line itself has failed. Either way, pouring something caustic down the drain every month is not one of the answers.

What we clear, and what we clear it with

Most of what we are called to is a branch line — a kitchen sink packed with grease, a bath that drains slowly, a toilet that will not clear. That is a cable machine and a working knowledge of where the line runs, and it is done in a visit.

The main drain is the same job at a larger size, and we clear those too. What changes is what a repeat tells you: a branch line that blocks again usually blocked again for the same ordinary reason, but a main drain that backs up twice in a year is a pipe problem, and clearing it a third time is money spent on the same afternoon over again.

When clearing is not the fix

If the line is broken, collapsed or has lost its fall, no amount of clearing will hold it. That is a main drain repipe rather than a drain cleaning, and it is a different piece of work with a different price on it.

What a customer said

  • Excellent experience with this company. We had a clogged kitchen sink. I called Sunday evening and they were there Monday morning. They were efficient and very reasonably priced. They were half the price of a different company that I received a quote from.

  • An excellent drain cleaning company. Had an emergency, they were very responsive and honest, and diagnosed without over charging. Would recommend to everyone.

Common questions

Can you clear the main drain, or only sinks and tubs?
Both. The main drain is the same job at a larger size, and we clear those too.
My drain keeps blocking every few months. Why?
A drain that backs up twice in a year is telling you about the pipe, not about what went down it. Some of those causes are ours to fix on the same visit: a fitting that was never right, or a vent that is not doing its job and is holding the water back. Others mean the buried line itself has failed.
Will clearing an old pipe damage it?
Cabling a line that is already cracked or scaled can find the weak spot. That is worth knowing before we start on an old cast iron run, and we will say so rather than discovering it for you.
Should I use a chemical drain cleaner first?
No. Pouring something caustic down the drain every month does not fix the underlying cause, and it makes the pipe less pleasant to work on.
