Repair first, where repair is honest
Plenty of what looks like a dead water heater is not. A pilot that will not stay lit, a tripped high-limit switch, a failed thermocouple or a burnt-out element are repairs, not replacements.
So the first thing we do is work out which failure it actually is and tell you plainly whether the unit is worth saving.
When it is genuinely time to replace it
Once a steel tank has rusted through from the inside there is no repair — the leak is the tank itself and it only gets bigger. The same goes for a unit well past its service life that needs a part every winter.
We size the replacement to the house rather than to whatever came out of it. A family that lost hot water every time the dishwasher ran was undersized before, and putting the same thing back repeats the problem for another decade.
