How to tell it is the main drain and not one fixture
A single slow fixture is a branch problem. A main drain problem shows up everywhere at once: several fixtures backing up together, a basement floor drain flooding when the washing machine empties, gurgling from a toilet when a bath drains, or a patch of unusually green wet grass over the run to the street.
Those symptoms are worth describing on the phone, because they change what we bring.
Why main drains fail in Worcester housing
Much of this city was piped long before plastic, so a great many runs are clay or cast iron. Clay joints move and let roots in; cast iron scales up from the inside and eventually splits. Both are ordinary and neither is your fault.
The other common failure is a belly — a section that has sagged so waste stands in it instead of running through. Clearing that gets you a few months. Correcting the fall fixes it.
Repiping the main drain, and when relining is the better answer
Replacing a main drain means getting to it. We excavate, take out what has failed, and re-lay the run at the right fall so it drains properly rather than standing. On most houses the trench is a single clean cut from the foundation out toward the street, and it is backfilled and made good when the new line is in and tested.
Where the existing pipe is intact enough to work with, relining it from access points at each end saves the yard, the driveway and a great deal of reinstatement cost. That is genuinely the better option when it is available.
It is not always available. A line that has collapsed, or one that has lost its fall along its length, has to be dug and re-laid — no lining can put a slope back into a pipe. We will tell you which of those you have rather than selling you the one with the better name.
